About Us

A different approach to Pediatric therapy

Neurophysiology maps the way your child engages and participates in the world.

Our Approach

Holistic

Occupational Therapists are well equipped at addressing not only the whole person, but also considers how the environment and occupation play a major role in function. This holistic approach takes into consideration  personal factors: age, gender, development, body function, dysfunction, values, beliefs, mood, motivation, their occupations: meaningful or preferred tasks, the skills and patterns needed for that task, and the environment: physical, social, cultural (OTPF, 2020). By analyzing all of these factors, we are able to truly understand why a child is having difficulty with performance.

Occupational Therapists are experts in modifying a task so a child can succeed at the just-right challenge. Our initial goal is to develop a trusting and caring therapeutic relationship that will help to facilitate successes. We will challenge your child to step out of his or her comfort zone in order to experience their true potential. Through these successes and failures, your child will learn to functionally navigate the obstacles of daily living with greater ease and joy.

Early Childhood Development

The first few years of a child's life are immensely important in terms of understanding how each child has to physically, emotionally, and socially develop in order to engage the world around them. Development does not just begin at birth, it begins in utero and progresses for years and years to come. To assist with the gap in maturation, the nervous system is born with involuntary motor responses known as Primitive Reflexes. These reflexes serve in developing patterns of movement that are foundational to the acquisition of functional skills.

Throughout the first year of life, these reflexes will typically integrate due to the baby's interaction with the world around them through various movements and experiences. This allows our nervous system to adapt and use higher order, more complex functions to replace those survival reflexes, and thus development continues. However, if your child encounters a delay in development these reflexes may have a difficult time integrating.

This is why seeing a development-focused therapist is important in identifying those missing links and restoring typical development for your child. The first years of life lay the foundation and the building blocks to the necessary skills for future endeavors like, school, sports, socializing, etc. Here at Dearey Therapy Services, we are experts in evaluating those missing links in development and providing the appropriate therapy to let those skills flourish.

Systems Functioning

A Neurophysiological Approach:

By taking a look at our body's systems and how they are functioning, we are able to determine the mechanisms of dysfunction. Our body is made up of 12 systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, urinary, reproductive, digestive, musculoskeletal, lymphatic, immune, and integumentary systems. Each of these systems plays a major role in our day-to-day functioning.

All 12 of these systems are interconnected and function in synchrony. If one system is not working properly, it can disrupt the whole network resulting in disorganized behavior. When treating a child, it is imperative that we assess each system and address how we can improve homeostasis among them. Our therapists are specialized in addressing and correcting any asynchronies we may find in order to assist the child in performing at their highest potential.
